Patrice Wills studied a Bachelor of Visual Arts at Nepean College of Advanced Education (now University of Western Sydney) and then whilst working as a community artist continued to study a Post Graduate degree in Secondary Education. Working in the community was formative and prompted further study at the University of New England to complete a Bachelor of Counselling, leading to specialisation in mental health, adolescent and family services.
Patrice has always maintained her own practice whilst working across the health and education sectors yet since 2018 has focused primarily on her artmaking in her Sydney studio. The work reflects and explores the human condition and spirit drawing upon her life experiences. Patrice paints her connection to people and places resulting in work soaked in feeling and mood.
The work is an exploration of women’s psychological position in place and the interconnectedness of the figure and the landscape. Patrice often returns to iconic Australian landscapes such as the desert, the outback, and the beach.
These vast wild places act as metaphors, unpacking concerns of freedom, resilience, and longing, whilst amplifying women’s agency. Patrice’s work is exhibited regularly, and she is frequently selected as a finalist in art awards and accrued in private collections
Patrice Wills, Only Women Know 2019 | Oil on board, 60 x 45 cm
Finalist, 2020 Pro Hart Outback Art Prize
I spent some time in a remote community in outback Australia and bow down to the First Nations Communities who have always been here. This painting is a nod to the resilience and power of the women. I carry the imagery of the women I met on country, an embodiment of the story and truth of the land.
