Terra Oscuro - Graeme Armstrong

Wolfram Street Graeme Armstrong

Terra Oscuro presents recent photographic work by Broken Hill based artist Graeme Armstrong.  When borrowed from their Latin roots, the title literally translates to Earth, Dark. A series of experimental and monochromatic prints interrogate the concept of a dark earth by examining the sometimes-sinister interaction between the natural and man-made world.

Using various photographic techniques from early wet plate collodion photography to contemporary digital manipulation, Armstrong applies his signature strong contrast; the chiaroscuro through which he views the harsh landscape of the Far West. Armstrong works sporadically and infrequently, often grappling with the elements when making work at the cusp of daylight. The exhibition captures this tension to offer a reassessment of both the use of and search for light within this seemingly dark earth.
