returning to a subject through a lifetime - Part One

Next date: Friday, 27 May 2022 | 06:00 PM to Sunday, 03 July 2022 | 04:00 PM

Hannah Bertram

As a prelude to a broader investigation of the archival, in returning to a subject through a lifetime: part one artist Hannah Bertram’s monumental installation sits alongside works from the Collection to present Temporarily Unavailable. The installation takes the Gallery’s building – the Sully’s Emporium – and its debris as an architectural archive. In a process of historicising and recontextualising, Bertram has repurposed materials from the Gallery’s recent renovation – it’s old and new floorboards, the plastic used to wrap and protect artworks, and the dust accumulated across the building over many years. The work investigates the logic of heritage as a protest against loss and invites us to consider the cyclical nature of conservation and erosion. In its final weekend, the work will be swept up to make way for part two of the 2022 Collection exhibition.
