2021

Open Award : First Prize

1st Prize Bonnie Quayle, Uncle badger bates

Bonnie Quayle | Uncle Badger Bates, Acrylic on canvas, 2021

What can I say? A well-known Barkindji elder. A member of the Barkindji Native title, an elder who attended all meetings. A Baaka River man through and through. Who roamed free in life.

Uncle Badger Bates is known in Australia and worldwide.

I am proud and honoured to be given the opportunity to be able to paint his portrait. I am also proud to be his niece.
He has been a pleasure to paint and to pass the knowledge onto the next generation and which he continues to do to this day.
