Time and Tide

Time and Tide is an exhibition by seven artists from city and regional locations in New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria who have consistently engaged with printmaking since the 1980s and whose works have been exhibited nationally and internationally.

The careers of Marian Crawford, Jan Davis, Dr Dianne Longley, Diana Orinda Burns, Jan Palethorpe, Penny Peckham and Olga Sankey have spanned a period during which printmaking worldwide has transformed from a creative practice drawing from the rich European heritage of engraving and the production protocols of the Fine Art Edition, to a practice in which the printed image now resides in a borderless realm. Various traditional processes are now often incorporated into a single artwork, and digital printing, rather than superseding its predecessors, has served to expand and enrich the material possibilities of a printed artwork.

The seven artists reflect on the evolution of their own practice within this changing context and will present significant early work(s) from their archives in conversation with new work that responds to the theme Time and Tide for the exhibition. In the production of the new, each artist observes where the new work echoes the old, exploring the beginnings and ends of those creative projects enjoyed over time, just as tides roll across a beach. The space between the two sets of works is where the richness of this proposal lies.
