2026 Pro Hart Outback Art Prize

The Pro Hart Outback Art Prize is Broken Hill City Art Gallery’s largest and most anticipated exhibition of the year. This national acquisitive art prize invites artists from across Australia to reflect the spirit, beauty, and complexity of the outback through diverse mediums - from painting and sculpture to photography, installation, and digital works.

 

2026 Prizes

First Prize: $20,000 acquisitive - Lucas Guilbert, Ignifolia, Eucalyptus Caesia (Silver Princess) & Mild Steel, 2025, 650 × 400 × 100 mm.
Second Prize: $2000 - Maurizio Paul Hirmer, Plumage: Kalthi – Emu, Couture Garment and Wall-Based Textile Artwork, 2026, 960 × 1400 × 100 mm.

Peoples Choice: $1000 (Voting open)

The Pro Hart Outback Art Prize is an acquisitive competition showcasing work in any media which reflects the spirit and diversity of the Australian Outback.

The prize consists of an Acquisitive First Prize, a Non-Acquisitive Second Prize and a People’s Choice Award with a total prize pool of $23,000.

PHOAP recognises the continued support and contribution to the arts by the Hart family. Pro Hart and his oeuvre are synonymous with Broken Hill’s fascinating history and reputation as a regional artistic hub. PHOAP recognises this contribution. 

The prize is made possible with the generous support of the Hart family in honour of Pro Hart.

When will the prizes be announced?

Friday 31st July, 2026.

 

Where can I watch the Prize Announcements?

The event will take place at the Broken Hill City Art Gallery, Friday 31st July with doors opening at 6pm.

The Gallery will share the wining artworks on their Social Media accounts, once the announcement has been made.

Will you send me a reminder about the event?

Gallery members and finalists will receive a formal invitation to the opening event. Everyone is welcome to attend, so please keep an eye on our social media channels for updates.

 

Who is the judge this year?

When is the Exhibition Open to the public?

The exhibition will run from the 31st July 2026 to 25th October 2026.

 

 

Do I need to book a time to visit the Gallery?

No, You can visit the Pro Hart Outback Art Prize during regular opening hours without a ticket.
