Christmas Bilbies of Broken Hill

Next date: Sunday, 25 October 2026 | 09:00 AM to 04:00 PM

Christmas Bilbies of Broken Hill is a unique public art project combining creativity, conservation and festive community fun.

Join acclaimed artist Jobella Bennett of Wedgetail Winds Studio for a hands-on wire sculpture workshop where you’ll create your own handcrafted bilby, complete with a festive personality. Your bilby could become a Santa, elf, Christmas present bearer or even a Christmas carol singer—the creative possibilities are endless!

The project aims to raise awareness of the greater bilby and the important conservation work being undertaken through the Wild Deserts project. Greater bilbies once lived throughout the Broken Hill region but became locally extinct following the introduction of feral cats, foxes and rabbits. Through Wild Deserts, bilbies have now been successfully reintroduced to Sturt National Park.

By bringing their story into the heart of Broken Hill, this project offers a fun way for the community to connect with this conservation success and celebrate the region’s unique wildlife.

Following the workshop, participating Broken Hill businesses will be invited to display the bilbies in their shop windows throughout the Christmas period, creating a festive town-wide trail. Families will be encouraged to visit participating businesses and locate each Christmas bilby using an activity card available from local retailers. Completed cards will go into a draw to win a bilby-themed Christmas prize.

Bilbies will be returned to participants after the Christmas display.
